Carlo Cartica (Tenor) (Rome 1865 - ?)


                                                   as Raoul in ‘’Gli Ugonotti’’
 


In 1894 he already appeared at La Scala where he sang as Duke in ‘’Rigoletto’’ and as Edgardo in ‘’Lucia di of Lammermoor’’ together with Nellie Melba. In the 1903-04 season he sang at the Teatro Regio in Parma very successfully as Alvaro in Verdi’s ’’La forza del destino’' and as Raoul in ‘’Gli Ugonotti’’. From 1909 to 1910 he was in North America where he belonged to the ensemble of the opera of Boston; there he had as Manrico in ‘’Il Trovatore’’ together with Guerrina Fabbri important success, also as Radames in ‘’Aida’’ and as Edgardo in ‘’Lucia di of Lammermoor’’. In 1911 he undertook an America tour with the Lombardi Opera Company with which he appeared as Manrico at the Teatro National in Washington. He sang the role of Manrico also in 1916 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome.

Cesare Formichi (Baritone) (Rome 1883 – Rome 1949)

He studied in Rome with Lombardo, and made his debut in December 1907 at the Teatro Olimpia in Bologna as Lescaut in ‘’Manon’’. He went on to appear in Italy's leading opera houses, including La Scala in Milan. Soon, he was accepting a string of engagements to sing outside Italy, notably in Kiev (in 1912), Buenos Aires (in 1914), Paris (1922), London (1924). He sang as first baritone at the Civic Opera House of Chicago  from 1922 to 1932. Notable roles of his included Ashton, Rigoletto, di Luna, Amonasro, Iago, and some Wagner parts sung in Italian (Klingsor, for example). Formichi possessed a big, rich-toned, important sounding voice which can be heard on the numerous acoustic and electrical recordings which he made during the peak of his career.

In 1904 at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele in Turin she (as Ceresoli-Salvatori) created the role of Sofia Ivanovna in the premiere of the Franco Alfano’s opera ‘’Risurrezione’’.

Alfredo Brondi (Bass) (Ferrara 1874 - Milan 1828)




He began his education with maestro Squarzoni in Ferrara and then in Milan with Cesare Rossi. In 1897 he debuted at the Teatro Sociale in Asolo in ‘’Poliuto’’ of Donizetti. He had a successful career in the leading Italian opera houses. In 1910 he appeared at La Scala as Rodolfo in ‘’Sonnambula’’. At the Teatro Dal Verme he appeared in 1908 as Colline in Puccini’s ‘’La Bohème’’ and as Pogner in ‘’Meistersingers’’. He achieved big success also at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo and in 1911 at the Teatro Dal Verme in Rome (as Rodolfo in ‘’Sonnambula’’). Also abroad he made successful guest performances and sang among other things in 1906 at the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon. In 1913 he appeared at the Teatro Regio in Turin, as well as at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona (as Ramphis in ‘’Aida’’). In 1914 he sang at the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona in ‘’Lohengrin’’. In 1915 he appeared at Pisa in ‘’Mefistofele’’ of Boito.

Enzo Leliva (Tadeusz Leliwa) (Tenor) (Teplik, Ukraine 1875 – Warsaw, Poland 1929)

His real name was Tadeusz Kopystcynski. He studied at first medicine at the university of Kiev, then law at the university of Warsaw. He received at the same time singing lessons from Mrs. Massini, later from A. W. Aleksandrowicz, also he studied with Jean de Reszke in Paris and with A. Brogi in Italy. In 1901 he made his opera debut at Saratov, afterwards he sang in the opera house of Kiev. The violinist Stanislaw Barcewicz helped him to appear at the Opera Theatre of Warsaw in which he debuted in 1902 as Radames in ‘’Aida’’ and remained till 1904. He appeared here among other things as Duke in ‘’Rigoletto’’, Alfredo in ‘’La Traviata’’, Enzo in ‘’La Gioconda’’ of Ponchielli, Fernando in ‘’La Favorita’’ of Donizetti, Hermann in Tchaikovsky’s ‘’Pique dame’’ and in the title roles of the operas ‘’Mazeppa’’ of A. Münchheimer and ‘’Chopin’’ of Orefice. During his engagement in Warsaw he guested in the opera houses of Lvov (Lwów) and Vilnius. By the invitation of the composer R. Leoncavallo who had heard him in Warsaw he went in 1904 to Italy where he sang as Milio in Leoncavallo’s opera ‘’Zazà’’ first at the Teatro Regio in Turin. In 1905 he guested at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples as Henning in the Italian première of Leoncavallo’s ‘’Roland von Berlin’’, afterwards in Turin, Palermo and at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. In 1905 he sang at the Teatro Lirico in Milan as Jontek in the Italian première of the Polish national opera ‘’Halka’’ of Moniuszko. He guested during his stay in Italy further in Poland and also in 1906 in the opera houses of St. Petersburg and Kiev. In 1907 he sang at La Scala as Radames in ‘’Aida’’ and guested in the same year in Mexico City. In 1908 he appeared in the opera houses of Barcelona, Madrid and Lisbon, then also at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In 1909 he appeared in Covent Garden as Pinkerton in ‘’Madame Butterfly’’ and as Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’ together with the famous soprano Emmy Destinn. In 1909 he sang for the first time in the USA, namely in the opera house of Boston (among other things as Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria rusticana’’ and as ‘ Alfredo in ‘’La Traviata’’), then also in Chicago and New York. From 1910 to 12 he was to be heard, primarily, in his Polish native country and in Russia. Then he went in 1913 again to Italy (Teatro Comunale Bologna, Teatro Carlo Felice Genua), however, came back with outbreak of the First World War in 1914 to Poland and sang here in Warsaw, later in Kiev primarily in concerts. In 1919 he finished his career in Kiev appearing last time in ‘’Halka’’of  Moniuszko. Since 1922 he worked as a teacher in Warsaw, one of his pupils was the famous tenor Jan Kiepura. He sang abroad, above all in Italy, under the name Enzo Leliva.

Luigi Colazza (Tenor) (Rome 1868 – Trieste 1927)




His stage debut took place in 1892 at the Teatro Quirino in Rome. In 1897 he sang with the first season of the Italian opera in Holland as Alvaro in ‘’La forza del destino’’. In 1899 he created for Bergamo the title role in ‘’Andrea Chénier’’ of U. Giordano. He sang the same role in 1901 at the Teatro Regio in Parma. In 1905 he appeared at the Teatro Municipale in Piacenza as Vasili in ‘’Siberia’’ of U. Giordano. Later he became a professor of the conservatory in Trieste.

Valentina Bartolomasi (Soprano) (Modena 1889 – Milan 1932)



She studied singing under her father, Bernardo Bartolomasi, a well known voice teacher. She made her professional opera debut in 1911 at the Teatro Verdi in Salerno. Early on in her career she appeared at the Teatro Dal Verme (1913) in Milan and at the Teatro Scribe in Turin. Her career ended prematurely due to illness in 1926. After retiring from the stage, Bartolomasi lived with her husband, Count Antoniani of Padua, in Milan. Jose Palet (Tenor) (Martorel, near Barcelona 1877 – Milan 1946)





He studied at the Conservatory of Barcelona with Juan Goula and debuted there in 1901 at the Teatro Liceo as Fernando in ‘’La Favorita’’ of Donizetti. He appeared first in Barcelona and Madrid, then came, however, to Italy. Here he sang among other things in 1913 at La Scala, as José in ‘’Carmen’’ and guested at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome and in other big theaters. In 1915 he appeared at the Teatro Nacional of Havana as Radames in ‘’Aida’’ (together with Juanita Capella, Maria Gay, Titta Ruffo and Gaudio Mansueto), in the following 1916-17 season he appeared in Havana as Enzo in ‘’La Gioconda’’ of Ponchielli, as Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’, as Riccardo in Verdi’s ‘’Ballo in maschera’’ and as Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’. In 1921 he guested in Madrid as Gérald in ‘’Lakmé’’ of Delibes with Maria Barrientos as a partner. In 1921 tour with the Scotti Opera Company through North America. In 1924 he sang at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in the premiere of the opera ‘’Esvella’’ of Gino Robbiani, already in 1912 he took part at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples in the premiere of the opera ‘’Hoffmann’’ of Guido Laccetti. In 1927 he sang in the Italian opera in Holland as Raoul in ‘’Gli Ugonotti’’ of Meyerbeer. In the same year he guested in the festival of Verona as Radames in Verdi’s ‘’Aida’’. He lived later as a singing teacher in Milan.
