ALFONS ECCARIUS (1891
– 1967)
He first trained as a bookbinder before studying singing in Geneva and
Dresden, and later with Flam in Berlin. As a beginner, he appeared at the
Dresden State Opera and subsequently at operetta theaters in Berlin. From 1924
to 1927, he was engaged at the Landestheater in Gera (Thuringia), followed by
engagements in Nuremberg (1927–1929) and Königsberg, East Prussia (1929–1932).
In 1930, he took part in the world premiere of Ernst Toch’s opera Der Fächer (The Fan). Between 1932 and 1934, he lived in Berlin, where he
appeared as a guest artist and sang operetta at the Plaza Theater, among other
venues. From 1934 to 1939, he was a member of the Stadttheater in Aachen.
In 1937, he undertook a concert tour throughout Europe, achieving
particular success as a lieder singer. During the Second World War, he
performed in Brno, and after the war returned to Gelsenkirchen (1945), from
where he made guest appearances in Dresden (1947), Düsseldorf, and Duisburg.
From 1946 to 1948, he was again engaged at the Koblenz City Theater.
His repertoire focused on lyrically inclined roles, including Wolfram in Tannhäuser, Germont in La Traviata, Valentin in Gounod’s Faust, Marcel in La Bohème, Rigoletto, and the title role in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. Several fine recordings of his voice were issued by Polydor.
