GABOR CARELLI (BORN AS KRAUSZ, GÁBOR PÁL) (BUDAPEST, HUNGARY, 1915 – MANHATTAN, NEW YORK CITY, U.S., 22 JANUARY, 1999)
He studied law and singing at the Franz Liszt Conservatory in Budapest. After two years of further education in Italy, including under the guidance of Beniamino Gigli, he made his debut in Florence and subsequently performed at various Italian opera houses. He then moved to North America, where he became a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1951 to 1974, an association lasting almost 26 years.
At the Metropolitan Opera, he specialized primarily as a tenor buffo. He made his debut as Don Curzio in Le Nozze di Figaro, a role he performed there 111 times. Over his career at the Met, he appeared in 56 roles and participated in over 1,000 performances. His repertoire included Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor, the Abbé in Adriana Lecouvreur, Borsa in Rigoletto (sung 118 times), Gaston in La Traviata, Trin in La Fanciulla del West, Elemer in Arabella by R. Strauss, Count Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Ernesto in Don Pasquale, Rodolfo in La Bohème, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, the Duke in Rigoletto, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Alfredo in La Traviata, the Captain in Wozzeck, and Tonio in La Fille du Régiment.
He also worked for two seasons in Israel. Starting in 1964, he taught singing at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
