Etienne Gibert (Tenor) (Jonquieres, near Orange, France 1859 - Paris, France 1929)
He was a pupil of Crosti and Obin at the Paris Conservatory and probably made his debut in 1887 at the opera house of Rouen as Fernando in ‘’La Favorita’’ of Donizetti. After few appearances in the French province in 1889 he made his debut at the Opéra-Comique in Paris where on 15. 5. 1889 he sang the role of Chevalier Roland in Massenet’s ‘’Esclarmonde’’. He remained till 1892 at the Opéra-Comique and changed in 1893 to the Grand Opéra where he mostly sang heavy tenor parts (beginning role in this house: Vasco in Meyerbeer’s ‘’Africaine’’). He remained active five years at the Grand Opéra in Paris where he also appeared as Lohengrin and as Tannhäuser. Already in 1895 he performed at the opera house of Monte Carlo as Faust in ‘’Mefistofele’’ of Boito and as Rinaldo in ‘’Armida’’ of Gluck and gave in the same year a guest performance at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. Later he guested above all in the leading opera theaters in the French province appearing in Bordeaux, Nice, Lyons and Toulouse. In the 1901-02 season he was engaged at the Metropolitan opera in New York where he sang in ‘’Roméo et Juliette’’ and in ‘’Faust’’. For Paris he created two important parts: In 1892 he sang at the Opéra-Comique as Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria rusticana’’ and in 1899 at the Théâtre Nouveau the role of Tristan in ‘’Tristan und Isolde’’. In 1909 he appeared at the Théâtre Trianon-Lyrique in the title role of Grétry’s ‘’Richard Coeur-de-lion’’. Chronology of some appearances 1887 Rouen Opera House
