MARCELLO GOVONI (BOLOGNA, 21 OCTOBER, 1885 - ROME, 10 DECEMBER, 1944)


 

 

 

He began his career as a baritone, making his debut in 1907 at the Teatro Sociale in Casalmaggiore as David in P. Mascagni’s Amico Fritz. Later, Govoni switched to tenor, achieving a second debut in 1918 at the Teatro Comunale in Bergamo as Werther in J. Massenet’s Werther. In 1920, he made guest appearances at Covent Garden in London as Ernesto in Don Pasquale and as Alfredo in La Traviata. In 1926, he performed at La Scala in Milan as David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. In 1927, he founded the Compagnia dell’Opera Comica, which included its own singers, chorus, and orchestra, and began performing to considerable acclaim. By 1929, he was appointed permanent director of the Teatro Reale dell’Opera in Rome, and in 1937, he was nominated commissioner for stage technicians and directors in Rome and its province. He retired from the operatic stage around 1930. His daughter, Marcella Govoni, enjoyed a successful career as a soprano.
