MATE CULIC-DRAGUN (MATTEO DRAGONI) (SPLIT, 6 NOVEMBER, 1890 - SAN FRANCISCO, 18 NOVEMBER, 1962)


 


 

He studied singing under Vezzani in Bologna and made his debut in 1911 as Silvio in Pagliacci at the Municipal Theater of Rovere. Over the next ten years, he primarily appeared at provincial operatic stages in Italy. In 1921, he sang the role of Barnaba in La Gioconda by A. Ponchielli at the Arena di Milano. By 1924, he was a member of the Italian opera company in Holland, and in 1923, he made a guest appearance at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna. Around 1925, he moved to North America, where he performed with various opera societies, mainly touring companies. His significant roles included Conte in Il trovatore, Posa in Don Carlo, Iago in Otello, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Gérard in Andrea Chénier, Escamillo in Carmen, Gellner in La Wally, Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana, and Telramund in Lohengrin. After retiring, he taught singing in San Francisco.
