ALFREDO
TEDESCHI (SAN FRATELLO, MESSINA, 1 JANUARY, 1882 - MILAN, 14 JANUARY, 1967)
His real name was
Alfio Tedesco, which he also used in his appearances in North America. He was a
pupil of M. Ortisi. He made his debut in 1902 at the Teatro Alfieri, Asti as
Elvino in ‘’La Sonnambula’’. During the following twenty years he had a
successful career as lyrical tenor at the famous Italian provincial theatres.
In the 1923-24 season he also appeared at La Scala as Arturo in ‘’Lucia di
Lammermoor ‘’. In 1915 and 1927 he guested at the Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires,
in 1928 he sang there as fisherman in the première of the opera ‘’Le
Rossignol’’ of I. Strawinski, also as Nicias in ‘’Thaïs’’ by J. Massenet and in the
premiere of the Argentine opera ’’Chrysantheme’’ of Peacan del Sar. In 1922 he
performedat the Arena di Verona as Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’. In 1920 he guested at
the Municipal theatre of Zurich. In 1926 he sang at the MET, New York as Canio
in ‘’Pagliacci’’. His career lasted very much long; still in 1945 he is to be
heard at the Teatro Grattacielo, Genova. He spent the last years at the
"Casa di Riposo G. Verdi" in Milan.
