ALFREDO
TEDESCHI (SAN FRATELLO, MESSINA, 1 JANUARY, 1882 - MILAN, 14 JANUARY, 1967)
His real name was Alfio Tedesco, which he also used during his
performances in North America. A pupil of M. Ortisi, he made his debut in 1902
at the Teatro Alfieri in Asti as Elvino in La Sonnambula. Over the next twenty years, he enjoyed a
successful career as a lyrical tenor at renowned provincial theaters in Italy.
In the 1923-24 season, he appeared at La Scala as Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor. He made guest
appearances at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in 1915 and 1927. In 1928, he
sang there as a fisherman in the premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol, as Nicias in Jules
Massenet’s Thaïs, and in the
Argentine opera Chrysantheme by
Peacan del Sar. He performed as Canio in Pagliacci
at the Arena di Verona in 1922 and guest-starred at the Municipal Theatre of
Zurich in 1920. In 1926, he sang as Canio at the Metropolitan Opera in New
York. His career extended well into later years, as he was still performing at
the Teatro Grattacielo in Genoa in 1945. He spent his final years at the
"Casa di Riposo G. Verdi" in Milan.
