ZANNIS
KAMBANIS (HERMOUPOLIS/SYROS, GREECE 1908 - PIRAEUS, GREECE 1992)
He studied singing at
the National Conservatory of Greece (Ethnikon Odeion) under the pedagogue Maria
Trivella and made his debut as Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’ at the Olympia Theater
(1938). Later he went to Roma and additionally perfected at the Accademia di Santa
Cecilia. In 1943 he was engaged by the Teatro dell’Opera in Roma and during
three seasons appeared at this opera house. In the time, after the World War
II, he undertook a huge number of guest performances. He sang in Napoli,
Bologna, Genova, at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo (1947, Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’
and as Pinkerton in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’ under the name Zani-Kambani), also in
Barcelona, Lisbon, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, Sydney and Boston. His
repertoire included Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’, Pinkerton in ’’Madama
Butterfly’’, Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’, Canio in
‘’Pagliacci’’, Andrea Chénier, Alvaro in ‘’La forza del destino’’, Don Carlo,
Manrico in ‘’Trovatore’’, Riccardo in ‘’Ballo in maschera’’, Edgardo in ‘’Lucia
di Lammermoor’’ and José in ‘’Carmen‘’. By the end of his career he appeared in
his native country and taught singing.
