FRANCISCO
VIÑAS (VIGNAS) (BARCELONA, 27 MARCH, 1866 – BARCELONA, 14 JULY, 1933)
He first studied at the Conservatory of Barcelona under Gonzalo
Tintorer and later with Goula. He made his debut in 1888 in Mataró, followed by
a successful performance at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona as Lohengrin in the
same year. In 1889, Viñas debuted at La Scala in Milan, again as Lohengrin,
achieving triumph. Over the following years, he performed at major Italian
theaters, including the Teatro Regio in Turin and the Teatro Carlo Felice in
Genoa, adding to his repertoire Cavalleria Rusticana, Mefistofele, and L'Africaine.
In 1893, Viñas made his debut at Covent Garden in London, followed by
his appearance at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples the next year. In 1895, he
first performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and later substituted for
tenor Giovanni Battista De Negri in Tannhäuser in Genoa. By 1897, he was
singing at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome.
Viñas appeared at La Scala in 1904 in A. Franchetti’s Germania, and in
1908, he performed at the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon in Tristan und Isolde. In
1913, he sang the role of Parsifal at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona alongside
Margot Kaftal, Cesare Formichi, and Vincenzo Bettoni. He returned to the Teatro
Liceo in 1916 to perform in Tannhäuser and sang for the last time on the opera
stage in 1918 in J. Manen’s opera Acte.
Viñas married Giulia Novelli, a mezzo-soprano with whom he had
previously sung Carmen in Palermo in 1892. He also sang the role of Turiddu in
the first performance of P. Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana in England in 1893.
Known for his powerful heroic tenor voice, he was considered a successor to the
renowned Spanish tenor Julián Gayarre.
