AUGUSTO SCAMPINI (GARLASCO, 1880 – BARCELONA, 1939)

He studied singing at the Milan Conservatory under del Fiume and made his debut in 1905 at Garlasco as Cavaradossi in Tosca. In 1907, he guest performed at the Teatro de l'Opera in Buenos Aires in J. Massenet's Hérodiade. That same year, he appeared at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo as Radamès in Aida and as Samson in C. Saint-Saëns's Samson et Dalila. He then enjoyed great success at renowned opera houses in Italy, Spain, South America, and Russia.

During the 1910-11 season, he performed at La Scala in G. Verdi's Simon Boccanegra and in G. Pacini's Saffo. In 1912, he sang as Manrico in Il Trovatore at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, and in 1915, he appeared as Radamès in Aida at the Teatro Politeama in Pisa. In the 1913-14 season, he performed at the German Theatre in Prague, where critics hailed him as the successor to Enrico Caruso.

In 1916, he sang in Spain and Santiago de Chile. During World War I, he volunteered for the Italian army, where he tragically lost his leg in combat. This injury ended his performing career, after which he taught singing in Barcelona.
