Carl Hauss (Tenor) (Strasbourg, France 4. 9. 1892 † Hanover, Germany 27. 9. 1982)





After completing his secondary education, he worked as a journalist for his father’s newspaper. Simultaneously, he studied singing at the Strasbourg conservatory, where the director was Hans Pfitzner. He was a soldier during the First World war. After the war, he made his debut in 1919 at Trier as Turiddu in ''Cavalleria Rusticana''. This debut was successful and he was accepted to sing parts such as Max, José, Lionel, and Tamino. In 1920, he made his debut at Karlsruhe as Rodolfo in ''La Boheme''. In the 1919-1921 seasons he sang at the Theater of Saarbrücken (1919-1921), then from 1921 to 1925 appeared at the Stadttheater in Duisburg. In the 1925-1926 season he performed at the Stadttheater in Nürnberg, then was engaged by the Staatstheater (Opernhaus) of Hannover, where he appeared from 1926 to 1952 and in 1953 as a guest. He was appointed the honorary member of this opera house. In Hannover he became one of the most popular singers of his generation. In the 1926-1927 season he performed at the Staatsoper, since 1927 he often sang at the Staatsoper in Dresden, since 1928 at the Opernhaus in Köln. In the 1929-1931 and again in 1934 he was to be heard at the Staatsoper in Vienna. In 1931 he appeared in the performances of ‘’Hoffmanns Erzählungen’’ produced by Max Reinhard atthe Berlin Schauspielhaus which excited a sensation. At the festival in Salzburg he sang in 1930 the part of Ernesto in ‘’Don Pasquale’’ by G. Donizetti and the Italian singer in ‘’Rosenkavalier’’. In 1934 he sang in Hannover in the premiere of the opera ‘’Blondin im Glück’’ by Hans Grimm; in 1943 he sang there in the German première of the opera ‘’Morana’’ of J. Gotovac. His stage repertoire included Florestan in ‘’Fidelio’’, Tamino in ‘’Zauberflöte’’, Adolar in ‘’Euryanthe’’, Nureddin in ‘’Der Barbier von Bagdad’’, Arnoldo in ‘’Wilhelm Tell’’, Duke in ‘’Rigoletto’’, Alfredo in ‘’La Traviata’’, Gabriele Adorno in ‘’Simon Boccangra’’, Maurizio in ‘’Adriana Lecouvreur’’, Romeo in ‘’Giulietta e Romeo’’, Dick Johnson in ‘’Fanciulla del West’’, Kalaf in ‘’Turandot’’, Raoul in ‘’Huguenots’’ and José in ‘’Carmen’’.
