Rose Pocidalo (Mezzo-Soprano) (? 1903 - ?)




The artist came from Belgium. After her study in Brussels her stage debut took place in 1928 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris as Santuzza in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ of P. Mascagni. In the seasons she had at the Opéra-Comique a huge success as Carmen - her special star role. Her repertoire included Charlotte in ‘’Werther’’, the title figure in ‘’Mignon’’ and Maddalena in ‘’Rigoletto’’. In 1935 she appeared at the Opéra-Comique in the premiere of the opera ‘’Gargantua’’ of Antoine Mariotte,. The same year at the Opéra Nice Côte d'Azur she sang in "Quatre-Vingt-Treize" of Charles Silver. She was to be heard at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. She performed also in Lyon, Rouen, Bordeaux and Lüttich. After her retirement she lived as a pedagogue in Rouen.

  1. Hers is a lovely, haunting voice with a richness that is slightly grainy in texture. I find her phrasing somewhat problematic, certainly not sweeping and smooth as most renditions of this selection that I've heard over the years. I'd like to hear the complete recording. She is an interesting artist worth following.
