Ferenc Szekelyhidy (Tenor) (Tovis, Romania Apr 4, 1885 - Budapest, Romania 27 Jun 1954)



He studied law in Cluj, and then singing with Farkas Ödön. In 1909 he made his debut at the Operaházban in opera of László Hunyadi. Until 1945 he was the leading tenor of this opera house. In 1911 and 1912 he made guest appearances at the Bayreuth Festival. Between 1933 and 1944 he taught singing at the Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetem. Sandor Konya was one of his students. His wife Marschalkó Rózsi was also an opera singer (mezzo-soprano). Zoltán Kodály wrote a few songs for him. His repertoire included Don Jose in ‘’Carmen’’, Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’, Almaviva in ‘’Il Barbiere di Siviglia’’, Walter von Stolzing in ‘’A nürnbergi mesterdalnokok’’, Parsifal, Duke in ‘’Rigoletto’’, Don Ottavio in ‘’Don Giovanni’’, Erik in ‘’A bolygó hollandi’’.
