Marie-Thérèse Gauley (Soprano)

Her mother, Mme Gauley-Texier (1866-1948), was a known Mezzo-soprano, who appeared in the 1911-1912 season at the Grand Opéra in Paris and from 1918 to 1919 sang at the Opera in Monte Carlo. After her education at the Conservatoire de Paris, she made her debut in 1924 at the Paris Opéra-Comique as Olympia in ''Les contes d'Hoffmann'' by J. Offenbach. Up to the end of the 1930's she had in this opera house a significant career. On 21. 5. 1925 she appeared at the Opera in Monte Carlo in the premiere of the opera ''L'Enfant et les sortilèges'' by M. Ravel. She sang also in the première of this work at the Opéra-Comique (1926). The composer commented enthusiastically on the interpretation of the artist. An other star role was Yniold in ''Pelléas et Mélisande''. Her repertoire included also roles like the Rosina ''Il Barbiere di Siviglia'', Lakmé, Andreloun in ''Mireille'' by C. Gounod. She appeared at the Opéra-Comique in a huge number of premieres of contemporary opera works, among other things in ''Sarati le Terrible'' by F. Bousquet (1928), ''Georges Dandin'' by M. d'Olonne (1930), ''Cantegril'' of R. Ducasse (1931), ''Le Sicilien ou l'amour peintre'' by O. Letorey (1930). In 1925 she took part at the same opera house in an unforgettable première of Rameau's ''Les Indes galantes''.In 1927 she sang at Aix-les-Bains in the premiere of the opera ''La pie borgne'' by H. Busser. She became known in France also as a concert soloist.
