Jules Gautier (Charles Gauthier) (Marseille, France 1866 – Paris? 1951)



After finishing his education at the Conservatories of Marseilles and Paris Gautier sang at the Opera of Angers, then at the Théâtre de la Haye in Hague. Since 1896 he appeared at the Grand Opéra, where he made his debut as Sigurd on 3 July. In 1898 he sang the part of Manrico in ‘’Trovatore’’ during the summer season at the Paris Renaissance, and the following year performed at the Opera in Nice. Since 1901 he was engaged (at least till 1904) by the Opéra-Comique in Paris, where he made his debut as Gérald in ‘’Lakmé’’ of L. Delibes. He remained there for two seasons, singing in productions of ‘’Carmen’’, ‘’Mireille’’, ‘’Cavalleria rusticana’’and ‘’La bohème’’. In the 1908-1909 season he appeared again at the Grand Opéra, where he performed in ‘’Les Huguenots’’, ‘’Samson et Dalila’’, ‘’Faust’’, ‘’Aida’’, ‘’Rigoletto’’, and ‘’Roméo et Juliette’’. In 1901 as Charles Gauthier he appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Manrico in ‘’Trovatore’’ togheter with Giuseppe Campanari, Marcel Journet and Rosa Olitzka. In 1907 he made guest appearance at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. Probably he retired in 1910.
