Arnold Gabor (Baritone) (Budapest 1880 – New York 1950)

He was of jewish origin. He studied singing in Berlin and in Italy and appeared with success in the first decade of the 20^th  century in South German opera stages. In 1911 he was engaged by the Budapest People's Opera. Then he had a successful career at the Budapest National Opera. In 1914 with great success he created there for Hungary the role of Amfortas in the Hungarian première of the ‘’Parsifal’’. In 1914 he came back again to Germany and was active in following decade in different German opera stages, among other things in Dessau. In Dessau he sang in 1920 in the premiere of the opera ‘’Magda Maria’’ of Oscar  von Chelius. In 1923 he was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera of New York (beginning role: Nachtwächter in ‘’Meistersingern’’). Till 1941 he remained a respected member of this opera house; he sang here a huge number of comprimario roles, but also roles like Alberich or Klingsor in ‘’Parsifal’’. In the 1931-32 season he made guest appearance at the Opera House of San Francisco. Later he worked in educational area in New York. His brother Jozsef Gabór (Balassagyarmat, Hungary 1879 - Illéspuszta, Slovakia 1929) was active from 1904-13 as tenor at the National Opera of Budapest.
