Juan (Joan) Raventós (Tenor) (Barcelona 1883 – Barcelona 1947)



His real name was Joan Raventós i Babot. He studied at the Conservatorio del Liceo in Barcelona under the pedagogue Antonio Ribera. He made his debut at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona in G. Rossini’s ‘’Barbiere di Siviglia’’ opposite Riccardo Stracciari and Elvira De Hidalgo (1911). At the beginning of the 1920’s he was established in Munich, developing a worth career in different european cities (Berlin, Munich, Vienna). He scored a great success in Berlin appearing in ‘’Les contes d'Hoffmann’’ by J. Offenbach, and especially at the Volksoper in Vienna. In 1911 he was at the Liceo de Barcelona, where he appeared in R. Wagner’s ‘’Die Walküre’’ (he sang the first act in Catalan). At the same opera house he appeared also in R. Wagner’s ‘’Tannhäuser’’ (1912). After his retiremet he settled in Munich, where he was a professor of singing for nearly twenty years. Performed often at the Catalan countries and in 1936 at Barcelona sang in the premiere of the Antoni Massana's opera ‘’Canigó’’. He married the soprano Nina Grieg-Halvorsen, who was a daughter of the Norwegian composer Johan Halvorsen, a niece of Edvard Grieg.
