Gavriil (Gabriel) Morskoy (Tenor) (Ukraine, Chernigov province 1862 - St. Petersburg 1914)



His real name was Heinrich Janchevetzki. He was born on March 23rd., 1862 in the. During his childhood he sang in a choir in Arseni a city in the area of Kiev. Morskoy finished the Chernigov grammar school and then went to the Petersburg Capella. He studied singing during the period 1882-89 at the Petersburg conservatoire with Everardi, Gabel and Palechek. In 1889, Morskoy made his debut in opera in Odessa (1889-92), then sang in Kiev (1892-95). During 1895-1906, he was at the Mariinski Theatre (Radames, José, Raoul, Lenski). He had a strong voice with a range up to high C. His repertory was around 50 roles, among them: Sobinin(Ivan Susanin-Glinka), Hermann, Samson, Vodemon, Werther, Ioann. He went also on tour in England. All his records are rare.
