Nazzareno De Angelis (Bass) (Aquila presso Roma 1881 - Roma 1962)





He sang as a boy in the choir of the Sistine Chapel. He was trained at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome and debuted in 1903 at the Teatro Comunale of Aquila as Podestà in ‘’Linda di of Chamounix’’ of  Donizetti. Then he did a quick career in the big Italian stages. In 1904 he sang at the Teatro Lirico in Milan the role Alvise  in ‘’La Gioconda’’ of Ponchielli, in 1905 he travelled around Holland, in 1906 South America, above all Chile. Since 1907 he had big success  at La Scala, Milan (Beginning role: Alvise). Here he sang on 15. 4. 1907 in the premiere of the opera ‘’Gloria’’ of  Cilea, on 10. 4. 1913 in the premiere of  Montemezzi’s ‘’L'Amore dei tre Re’’ singing the role of king Archibaldo, since one of his star roles. Already in 1908 he appeared there with great success  in ‘’La Vestale’’ of  Spontini. In 1908 he guested in Holland; in 1913 he performed in the performances of Verdi's operas at the Teatro Regio Parma on the occasion of the Verdi's year. In the 1909-10season he sang at the Manhattan Opera House. In the 1910-11 season and from 1920 to 1925 he worked at the Chicago Opera, from 1910 to 1925 and from 1928 to 1938 at the opera house of Rome. He appeared with great success also at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. In 1911 he sang there the role of king Philipp in the première of Verdi’s ‘’Don Carlos’’. Guest performances followed in whole Europe and America, however, La Scala remained his real artistic home where he sang regularly till 1933. In 1920, 1925 and 1931 he had big success in the festival of  Verona. In 1939 he sang for the last time in the festival at the Thermen of the Caracalla in Rome in ‘’Mefistofele’’. Then he appeared in concerts and worked as pedagogue in Milan and Rome; he spent his old age in his hometown Aquila.
