Alexander Davidov (Alexander Davidoff) (Tenor) (Poltava 1872 – Moscow 1944)

His real name was Israel Levenson. He received early vocal training in church choirs and eventually became a pupil of the well-known professor Camillo Everardi in St. Petersburg (1890-1892). He made his stage debut in 1889 at Ekaterinoslav in Verdi’s ‘’Traviata’’. Then he toured in opera and operetta with various companies, visiting Kharkov, Nizhny-Novgorod and other provincial centers. He then joined the Odessa Opera, and in 1896 joined Mamantov's private opera company in Moscow. In 1900 he was engaged by the Imperial Opera in St. Petersburg (Mariinsky Theatre), and also appeared with great success in  guest performances in Paris. He remained a member of the St. Petersburg Opera (Mariinsky Theatre) until 1914, but because of increasing deafness, he was seldom able to perform after 1912. Between 1914 and 1924 he was active as a concert singer; thereafter he lived abroad for some years, and for a short time worked as regisseur to some Russian opera companies in Paris. He returned to Russia in 1935, and from 1936 until his death in 1944, taught at the Kirov Theatre in Leningrad. Davidov was considered one of the greatest Russian tenors of his time, and sang a wide variety of roles, ranging from the lyrical to the dramatic. It should be noted that, in spite of his deafness, Davidov did record some  electrical recordings while in Paris in the late Twenties, the self-composed song on our disc being one of them.
