Giovanni Voyer (Tenor) (Benicarlo, Valencia 1901 - Lisbon, Portugal 1976)

His real name was Juan Voyer. He studied in Milan and made his debut at the Teatro Sociale in Ostiglia as Pinkerton in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’. It happened in 1927. Between 1933 and 1948 he sang at La Scala in Milan as Tristán, Parsifal, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser and Florestán. In 1933 he performed at Covent Garden in London in ‘’La dannazione di Faust’’ of Berlioz under T. Beecham. In 1938 he appeared at the Opera Theatre of Rome in the premiere of ‘’La mujer sin sombra’’ of R. Strauss. In 1939 at the Teatro Comunale in Florence he sang in the premiere of the opera ‘’Re Lear’’ of  V. Frazzi. After his retirement, in 1953, he taught singing at the Conservatory of Lisbon.

Voyer sang Siegmund to Callas' Brünnhilde in the famous January 1949 La Fenice performances (famous because Callas learned Elvira in "I puritani" during the run of "Die Walküre" and sang Bellini's opera immediately afterwards). At the end of the month they both repeated their respective roles in Palermo.
