Giovanni Voyer (Tenor) (Benicarlo, Valencia 1901 - Lisbon, Portugal 1976)

Tristan

His real name was Juan Voyer. He studied in Milan and made his debut at the Teatro Sociale in Ostiglia as Pinkerton in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’. It happened in 1927. Between 1933 and 1948 he sang at La Scala in Milan as Tristán, Parsifal, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser and Florestán. In 1933 he performed at Covent Garden in London in ‘’La dannazione di Faust’’ of Berlioz under T. Beecham. In 1938 he appeared at the Opera Theatre of Rome in the premiere of ‘’La mujer sin sombra’’ of R. Strauss. In 1939 at the Teatro Comunale in Florence he sang in the premiere of the opera ‘’Re Lear’’ of  V. Frazzi. After his retirement, in 1953, he taught singing at the Conservatory of Lisbon.

He was born into the Jewish family. His real name was Henry Arensen. At the beginning he worked as tailor in New York. He was found by a musical amateur singing at a Yiddish wedding. He started his career as a concert singer. In 1910 he made his debut at the Boston Opera as Manrico in ''Il Trovatore'' of Verdi. During his career he sang in opera houses of Canada, Italy and Germany. In 1922 as Enrico Arenson together with O. K. Nazarova, O. V. Pototskaya and M. A. Tamarina he performed in concert at the Russian Grammar School in Zelenogorsk (Russia). He sang on stage under the names Andrea Arensen, Enrico Arenson and Andre Arensen. Probably in Italy he met Nadine Legat, a fine singer who become his wife.

He made his debut as baritone. It happened in 1900 when at the Teatro Manzoni in Pistoia he sang the role of David in Mascagni’s ‘’L’Amico Fritz’’. In 1903 Fazzini made his second debut as tenor appearing as Loris in ‘’Giordano’s ‘’Fedora’’. In 1906 he appeared at Covent Garden in London as Don Jose in ‘’Carmen’’ with Angelo Scandiani and Louise Kirkby Lunn. In 1913 he performed at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice as Otello in Verdi’s ‘’Otello’’ with Enrico Nani and Sara Fidelia Solari. Approximately from 1920 he started to appear as comprimario.

Antonio Fassino (Tenor) ( Piobesi Torinese 1874 - Padova 1913)

He sang in the chorus of Milan and Turin. He started his career as baritone. later he switched to tenor, making a second debut at the Politeama Armandi in Asti as Pollione in ‘’Norma’’. It Happened in 1902. In 1904 he performed at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo as Alvaro in ‘’La forza del destino’’. In 1906 he undertook a big South America tour with very successful appearances in Montevideo (Teatro Solis) and Rio de Janeiro (Teatro Victoria). In 1908 together with P. Mascagni’s opera troupe he presented composer’s new opera ‘’Amica’’ in different Italian theatres – Genova (Politeama Genovese), Roma (Teatro Costanzi), Trieste (Politeama Rossetti), Verona (Teatro Ristori). In 1907  Fassino sang at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele in  Giordano’s ‘’Andrea Chenier’’. The singer who was married since 1907 with the soprano Giuseppina Cinzano coming from Turin died in 1913 suddenly during an engagement in Padua.

Giuseppe Agostini (Tenor) (Verona 1870 - Abdington 1951)

In 1895 Agostini made his debut at the Teatro Municipale in  Alessandria. On 16. 5. 1898 he performed at the Walleck Theatre in  New York première of the opera ‘’La Boheme’’. In 1910 he appeared at the Teatro Massimo in  Palermo in the première of Mascagni’s opera ‘’Amica’’. He had his biggest success in North America where he appeared almost annually with the San Carlo Opera Company. In 1903 he substituted at the Metropolitan Opera for the ill Enrico Caruso in two performaces (as Rodolfo  in ‘’La Boheme’’ and as Duke in ‘’Rigoletto’’). Still in 1921 he was active with the San Carlo Opera Company. Later he taught singing in Abington.

Fulgenzio Abela (Tenor) (Barcelona 1880 - Buenos Aires ?)

He studied singing in Buenos Aires under the Spanish conductor Ivan Goula (who also taught, among others, Blanchart, Viñas, and Palet). Abela’s first performances seem to have been in Buenos Aires in ‘’Lucrezia Borgia’’ and ‘’Dolores’’ (Bretón). The same year he appeared at the Liceo, Barcelona, in ‘’La Favorita’’ and ‘’Mefistofele’’. During the following two decades he sang with considerable success in Italy (Torino, Trevisio, the Dal Verme in Milano, Genova, the Costanzi in Roma and so on) as well as at the Colón in Buenos Aires (1910), Chile, Spain, and Greece. Abela’s repertoire included the principal tenor roles in ‘’La Traviata’’, ‘’Adriana Lecouvreur’’, ‘’Rigoletto’’, ‘’Tosca’’, ‘’Faust’’, ‘’Boris Godounov’’, ‘’Amico Fritz’’, and a number of other operas and zarzuelas. His last years were spent in Buenos Aires and died there, in Ramos Mejia Hospital by an gastrointestinal bleeding.

Nicola Fasciolo (Tenor) (Novi Ligure 1868 - Torino 1945)

He studied piano and organ, then also song in Turin. He never performed on the opera stages and appeared only in concerts. He excited big sensation as a soloist in the oratorios of the priest and composer Lorenzo Perosi. Together with the Mezzo-soprano Chiarina Fino-Savio and the baritone Giuseppe Kaschmann he counted as a leading interpreter of the works of Perosi. He sang in numerous churches in Italy, appearing also at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and in other italian opera stages in performances of oratorios. In 1902 he had a special success when he reported the tenor part in Perosi’s ‘’Risurrezione di of Cristo’’ at the cathedral of Siena. In December,1902 he sang in the Italian première of the oratorio ‘’San of Francesco’’ of Edgar Tinel in Milan and in Florence in ‘’Maria al Golgota’’ of Antonio Sonzogno together with Guerrina Fabbri. In 1912 he performed at the Teatro Regio in  Parma in the oratorio ‘’Judith’’ of  Arnaldo Furlotti. In 1904 together with the soprano Irma Monti-Baldini and the baritone Giuseppe Kaschmann he sang in Warsaw in Perosi’s oratorio ‘’Il Giudizio Universale’’. In 1919 he undertook as a soloist with the Società Polifonica Romana a big concert tour through the USA and Canada. From 1900 to 1940 he was the soloist of the Royal House and of the Cathedral in Turin.

She studied with Virginia Boccabadati in Milan. In 1899 she made her debut at the Teatro Grande in Brescia as Laura  in ‘’Gioconda’’. In 1892 she performed at the Teatro Annibal Caro  in Civitanova Marche as Leonora in ‘’La Forza del destino’’. In the 1894-95 season De Marcchi appeared at the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon in ‘’L’Africana’’, ‘’Lohengrin’’, ‘’I Puritani’’ etc. In 1895 she also sang in Trieste, Teatro Comunale as Nedda in ‘’Pagliacci’’. Finally in 1898 she appeared at the Teatro Real in Madrid where she sang in ‘’Il Gladiatore’’ of G. Orefice. In 1901 De Macchi performed at La Scala in Milan in the title role of the opera La Regina Di Saba’’ of K. Goldmark. Guest performances followed in Prague (1901), Bucharest (1903) and Berlin (1902). On 16. 8. 1902 she appeared at the Teatro Verdi in Vicenza in the premiere of the opera ‘’'Cecilia’’ of G. Orefice. In 1904 she made guest appearance at the Metropolitan opera in New York; here she sang the title role in ‘’Lucrezia Borgia’’ of Donizetti together with Enrico Caruso and Edyth Walker. At the MET she performed aslo  in  ‘’Gli Ugonotti’’, ‘’Aida’’ and ‘’Cavalleria rusticana’’. In 1909 she appeared for the last time at the Teatro Lirico in Milan as Carmen in Bizet’s ‘’Carmen’’.

Julian Biel (Tenor) (Saragossa 1869 – Barcelona 1948)

At first he worked as a painter. He was a student of Antonio Cotogni in Rome. In 1900 he made his debut at the Teatro Reale in Madrid as Radames in ‘’Aida’’. In 1901 he moved to the Principal Theater in Sargossa where he appeared with famous baritone Marino Aineto and Fidela Gardeta. The next year he sang at  the Teatro de la Ópera in Buenos Aires where he again performed the role of Radames in Verdi’s ‘’Aida’’. In 1903 Biel debuted at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona as Vasco in ‘’L’Africana’’. From 1903 to 1907 he performed regularly at the Teatro Reale in Madrid and also made guest appearances in Europe. In Italy Biel made his debut in Bologna as Manrico in ‘’Il Trovatore’’, then he performed at La Scala in Milan again as Manrico in ‘’Il Trovatore’’ under A. Toscanini who considered him best interpreter of the role of Manrico. From 1905 to 1906 Biel rivalled in Covent Garden with Caruso. He also made guest appearances in France, Belgium, Alemania, Portugal and Russia. In 1917 for psychological problems Biel moved back to Spain where he taught singing. He died forgotten by all.

Luis Canalda (Tenor) (Santa Bárbara/Tarragona 1896 - Barcelona 1962)

He made his debut at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid as Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’ (1913). The next year he performed at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona as Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’. During the 1910s and 1920s he was a acknowledged interpreter of Heldentenor Wagner roles in Spain and Italy.

Charles Rousseliere (Tenor) (Saint-Nazaire 1875 - Joué-lès-Tours 1950)

Originally a blacksmith by trade, he studied with Albert Vaguet at the Paris Conservatoire and made his début at the Opéra as Samson in 1900. The following year he sang in the première of Camille Saint-Saëns's Les barbares, and he remained with the company until 1905. Until 1919 he was a favourite at Monte Carlo, where he appeared first in La damnation de Faust; premières there included Pietro Mascagni's Amica, Saint-Saëns's L’ancêtre and Gabriel Fauré's Pénélope. His début at the Metropolitan in Roméo et Juliette in 1906 coincided with that of Geraldine Farrar , who received more attention; his dramatic skill was appreciated but the power of his voice, sometimes strident, suggested that he should turn to more heroic roles. This he did on his return to France, adding Otello, Lohengrin, Siegfried and Parsifal to his repertory. He also appeared in Berlin, Buenos Aires and Milan, and in his later years sang mostly at the Opéra-Comique where in 1913 he created the title role in Gustave Charpentier's Julien. His varied repertory is well represented in recordings made between 1903 and 1926: his voice is strong and clearly defined, his style authoritative in declamation and well mannered in more lyrical music.
