Lomelino Silva (Tenor) (S. Pedro, Funchal, Madeira / Portugal, Spain 1892 - Lisbon, Portugal 1967)

He should become originally an officer and entered in this intention into the Portuguese army. after discovering that he had voice he studied with Giovanni Lauro and Ercole Pizzi in Milan. In 1921 he debuted at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan. In 1922 he sang at the Italian opera in Holland as Duke in ‘Rigoletto’’. In 1924 he appeared at the Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon as Cavaradossi in ‘’Tosca’’. He was called ‘’Portuguese Caruso’’. In 1926 he went in the USA and sang successfully at the opera theatre of Philadelphia as a partner of the famous baritone Titta Ruffo.

  2. I confirm the info. Even though Madeira is an autonomous region, is still a part of the Portuguese Republic.
    I didn't knew about this one, nice discovery. I have a good one for a future post: Veriano Luchetti. Why is Luchetti forgotten by opera lovers is a mistery to me
