Antonio Notariello (Tenor) (Foggia, Italia 1892 – London, England 1975)




He studied singing under Agostino Roche and Fernando De Lucia in Napoli and began his career in 1919, appearing in Napoli (Teatro San Carlo), Roma (Teatro Costanzi) and Milano (Teatro Dal Verme). He has been described by the leading music critic of Naples as the most classical and beautiful tenor of the young generation. In 1921 under engagement to Meters. J. & N.  Tail, he was induced to extend his English, American, and Continental tour to Australasia; and in New Zealand and Sydney, where he was associated with thoVerbrugghen Orchestra at the Sydney Conseryatorium, he won tremendous popularity. He then toured Australia with the Melba Company during the 1920s singing Rodolfo in “La Boheme’’ and Duca in “Rigoletto’’. He came to England in 1929, where he remained for the rest of his life. He last broadcast in 1948 on the Western Regional programme. (Information supplied by Michael E. Henstock, University of Nottingham). In 1936 he was married to the daughter of John Macmillan Brown, a Scot who became a prominent New Zealand anthropologist and university leader. His career cut short due to unspecified illness.

She was born in an Italian-French family. She received her education in Bucksport (Maine) and Milan. In 1917 she was engaged by the conductor Cleofonte Campanini to appear at the Chicago Opera (beginning role: Giglietta in the American première of P. Mascagni’s ‘’Isabeau’’), where shesang with great success as Dalila in C. Saint-Saëns’s ‘’Samson et Dalila’’, Pierotto in ‘’Linda di Chamounix’’ of G. Donizetti and as Cieca in A. Ponchielli’s ‘’La Gioconda’’. In 1918, as a member of the Chicago Opera, she made guest appearance at the Lexington Theatre of New York, as a partner of Amelita Galli-Curci in G. Meyerbeer ‘’Dinorah’’. In 1920 she was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She appeared there, however, only in one performance, as Amneris in G. Verdi’s ‘’Aida’’. In 1921 she sang  at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires the part of Amneris in ‘’Aida’’, then been active, however, only as a concert singer and in the educational area. She maintained temporarily a private studio in the building of the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

She studied singing at the conservatoires of Algiers and Paris and in 1916 she made her debut at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, wherer she appeared till 1919. Then she sang opera parts at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées and at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris (among other things the part of Octavie in ‘’Cléopâtre’’ of J. Massenet). The same time she appeared in operettas at the Théâtre Marigny and at the Théâtre Mogador in Paris. In the last-called theater she appeared only 100 times in the operetta ‘’La Mascotte’’ of Audrey and sang there in 1948 in the premiere of the operetta "Violettes Impériales" of Vincent Scotto. She continued her opera career and made guest appearances at the French provincial theaters. In the 1930-1931 season she sang at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris in G. Rossini’s ‘’Wilhelm Tell’’, "La Dame blanche" of François-Adrien Boieldieu and ‘’Quo vadis?’’ of Jean Nouguès. In  the 1930-1932 seasons she was active again at the Opéra-Comique, where she appeared among other things in ‘’Le joueur de viole’’ of Laparra and ‘’Angélique’’ of  Ibert. She was also known as a song interpreter. In  the 1947-1950 seasons she was to be found once more at the Théâtre Mogador.

She studied singing under the pedagogues Jenny Meyer, Mathilde Mallinger and August Iffert and made her debut in 1901 at the Stadttheater in Strasbourg. Here she remained active four years. In 1904 she made guest appearance at the Bayreuth Festival. In the 1905-1907 seasons she sang at the Deutschen Theater in Prague. From 1907-1908 and 1909-1910 she was a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In the 1909-1911 seasons she was a member of the Kroll-Oper in Berlin. In 1911 she appeared at the Covent Garden in London in the English première of the "Königskinder" by E. Humperdinck. In the 1914-1916 she was engaged by the Hofoper in Dresden. She made guest appearances also in Amsterdam (among other things in 1913 as  Herodias in ''Salome'' of Richard Strauss), Berlin, Brussels and Helsinki.

She studied singing at the Conservatoire in Paris with Piffarelli. And made her debut in 1895 at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels as Ines in G. Meyerbeer’s ‘’Africaine’’ and in 1896 appeared in  this opera house, to which she belonged till 1898, as Jeanne in the premiere of the opera ‘’La Vivandière’’ of B. Godard. Then in 1899 she joined to the Paris Opéra-Comique. Here she made her debut in the opera "Beaucoup de bruit pour rien" of Puget and during the following years, among other things she performed as Benjamin in ‘’Joseph’’ of E. Méhul, Philine in ‘’Mignon’’of A. Thomas, Micaela in ‘’Carmen’’, sang the title roles in the operas ‘’Manon’’ of J. Massenet and ‘’Louise’’ of G. Charpentier. Since 1908 she was a member of the Grand Opéra in Paris; here the part of Elsa was her beginning role in R. Wagner’s ‘’Lohengrin’’. She remained in this opera house before outbreak of the First World War. In 1911 she made guest appearance at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. The next year she appeared in an open air performance of ‘’Orfeo ed Euridice’’ in Lausanne (as an Euridice). About her other appearances nothing can be determined. Her extensive repertoire included Philine in ‘’Mignon’’, princes in ‘’Cendrillon’’, Violetta in ‘’Traviata’’, Mimi in ‘’La Bohème’’, Elsa in ‘’Lohengrin’’ and Bertha in ‘’Le Prophète’’.

She was the daughter of Hungarian parents. At the age of 16 she went to Milano where she studied with several Maestri. In 1913 she made her debut in Italy in the operetta ‘’The Geisha’’ of  S. Jones. In the 1913-1914 season she undertook a South America tour with the Marchetti Opera Company appearing among other things in "Lustigen Witwe", "Zigeunerbaron", "Fledermaus", "Boccacio" and in Offenbach’s "Schöner Helena". In 1913 she had her first success at the Teatro Victorio, then at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires as Gilda in ‘’Rigoletto’’. In the 1913-1914 season she appeared in Italian theaters in operas and operettas, among other things in Rome, Turin, Genoa and Naples. In 1914 she was surprised in South America by the First World War and went to the USA. She went to New York for further studies with Gabriele Sibella and in 1918 she sang the part of Nedda in ‘’Pagliacci’’at the Academy of Music in New York. Then she appeared in the Stuyvesant Park of New York as Rosina in ‘’Il Barbiere di Siviglia’’. In 1922 she sang in the New York Broadway in the French opera ‘’Galathée’’ of Massé. She was known in North America by her concerts, her radiorecordings and sound recordings. In 1923 she appeared in the american premiere of of Schönberg’s "Herzgewächse". In 1924 she sang at the Manhattan Opera in New York the part of Oscar in ‘’Un Ballo in maschera’’. In 1926 she appeared in Montreal as Gilda. In 1929 as a member of the Franchetti Opera Company she appeared as Rosina. In  1931 in Los Angeles she sang in the operetta ''The Geisha''. In 1929 she gave a concert in New York. Then she took her residence in San Francisco, later in New York, where she arranged opera performances for children. In 1946 she married thr actor A. J . Herbert, worked as a pedagogue in Vienna, however, came in 1964 again to New York, where she devoted herself once more to the children's operas.

Blanche Marchesi (Soprano) (Paris, France 1863 - London, England 1940)





She was the daughter of the distinguished Italian baritone and teacher Salvatore Marchesi de Castrorie (1822-1908) and the famous German mezzo-soprano and pedagogue Mathilde (née Graumann) Marchesi de Castrone (1821-1913). After studying violin, she turned to vocal training with her mother.  She began her career singing in private and charity concerts in Paris, and then appeared in Berlin and Brussels in 1895. On June 19, 1896, she made her London debut in a concert and made England her home. In 1900 she made her operatic debut as Brünnhilde in Die Walkure in Prague, and then returned to England to sing with the Moody-Manners Company. In 1902 she appeared at London's Covent Garden as Elisabeth, Elsa, and Isolde. For the most part, however, she pursued a career on the concert stage. Later she was also active as a teacher. She made her farewell concert appearance in 1938. She published memoir A Singer’s Pilgrimage (London, 1923), and the didactic volume The Singer’s Catechism (London, 1932).

                                                                  Orphée

She studied singing at the Conservatoire in Paris under Dubulle and made her debut in 1908 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris in Gluck’s ‘’Orphée’’. This part remained her real star role. In 1911 she appeared as Orpheus at the Arena d’Orange. In 1910 she sang at the Opéra-Comique  in the premieres of the operas ‘’Léone’’ of Samuel-Rousseau and Ernest Bloch’s ‘’Macbeth’’. In 1920 she appeared in the premiere of ‘’Le Sauteriot’’ of  Sylvio Lazzari. On 4. 3. 1913 she performed at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in the premiere of the opera ‘’Pénélope’’ of Gabriel Fauré. Beside Orpheus, the part of Charlotte in Massenet’s ‘’Werther’’, was also counted her star role. At the Opéra-Comique she was known as successor of Marie Delna. In 1929 she had one of her biggest successes at the Grand Opéra in the part of Dalila in ‘’Samson et Dalila’’ by Saint-Saëns. After successful guest performances at the Grand Opéra in Paris, Marseille, Toulouse and Bordeaux, she devoted herself more and more to the concert appearances. She counted as one of the most significant French song interpreters of her time. In 1934 she gave a recitals in Scandinavia, Belgium and Holland.
