Ottokar Mácha (Tenor) (Celovec, Czechoslovakia 1895 - ?)



He been descended from a Czech family and received the first singing education at the conservatoire in Prague from K. Burian, then he continued with August Iffert in Dresden. His debut took place in 1915 at the Municipal Theatre of Pilsen to which he belonged till 1918. Then he joined to the Vinohradské Divadlo (Theatre in Weinbergen) in Prague. In 1920 he was engaged as a heroic tenor by the German Land Theatre in Prague, where he sang mostly R. Wagner's repertoire. In the 1927-29 seasons he was active at the Theatre in Saarbrücken, in the 1929-30 season at the Municipal Theatre of Münster, in the 1930-33 seasons at the German Theatre in Teplitz-Schönau, in the 1933-34 season at the German Theatre of Aussig (Ustí nad Labem). From 1934-37 he appeared as a guest in different Czech theaters, also at the National Theatre in Prague. In 1939-42 again he was a member of the German Theatre in Brünn (Brno). His repertoire included roles like Florestan in ‘’Fidelio’’, Max in the ‘’Freischütz’’, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Otello of Verdi, Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’, José in ‘’Carmen’’, Samson in ‘’Samson et Dalila’’ of Saint-Saëns etc. He was married with dancer Maria Klimesch. He spent his old age in Baden, near Vienna.

Roberto Turrini (Tenor) (Arco 1913 - Arco 2001)



He studied in Milan with the tenor Alfredo Cecchi and made his debut in April 1947 as Pinkerton at the Teatro Sociale di Asola in Mantua. He followed that with further appearances in ‘’Madama Butterfly’’ in Naples, and in 1948 went on to sing in Turin and Florence (‘’Aida’’), in Parma in 1949 and Milan and Rome in 1950. His performances in London were in ‘’Aida’’ (Stoll Theatre, 1957), ‘’La forza del destino’’ (Drury Lane, 1958) and ‘’Aida’’ (Covent Garden, 1958 and '59). He appeared as widely as Portugal, Switzerland, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Egypt, Turkey and Iran, and ended his career in 1961 singing Otello in Antwerp. Other roles included Don Carlos, Macduff, Gabriele Adorno, Arrigo, Cavaradossi, Calaf, Dick Johnson, Don Jose, Enzo Grimaldi, Andrea Chenier, Turiddu and Canio. He sang in the first modern performance of Cherubini's ‘’Lodaska’’ (Milan, 1950), in a new edition of Alfano's ‘’Sakuntala’’ (Rome, 1952) and in the premiere of Chailly's ‘’La riva delle Sirti’’ (Monte-Carlo, 1959). He was a dramatic tenore di forza with a voice of burnished and penetrating tone that took him to many major international operatic centres. He was heard at London’s Drury Lane Theatre in ‘’Aida’’, underlining his reputation as a singer who could thrill by the sheer power of his voice.

Willy Schüller (Tenor)




He began his stage career in 1902 at the Municipal Theatre of Essen and went from there to appear in the 1904-06 seasons at the Vienna Volksoper. Then he was engaged during a season by the Lortzing Theatre in Berlin and undertook in the 1907-08 season an USA tour. After his return he lived in Berlin, from where he guested in numerous German stages and carried out in 1910 a Holland tour. In the 1911-12 season he took over the management of Wilhelm-Theaters in Magdeburg in which he also appeared as a singer. About the other activities of the artist who was married the soprano Hanna Mara nothing can be determined. His repertoire included roles like the Tamino in ‘’The Magic flute’’, Lyonel in Flotow’s ‘’Martha’’, Fenton in ‘’Lustigen Weibern von Windsor’’ of Nicolai, Faust in ‘’Faust’’ of Gounod, José in ‘’Carmen’’ and Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’.

Marian Alma (Tenor) (Zaleszyki, Poland 1860 - Berlin 1945?)



First he studied at the Lviv Polytechnic, then singing under Walery Wysocki in Lviv and made his debut there in 1878 as Lorenzo in ‘’Fra Diavolo’’ of D. Auber. He remained in this Opera House till 1884. Then he appeared in the 1884-85 season at the Opera House in Olmütz (under surname Manoli, which he filed later again), in the 1885-86 season at the Vienna Court Opera, from 1886-88 at the Municipal Theatre of Mainz, in the 1888-90 seasons at the Berlin Court Opera, from 1890-93 at the Opera House of Dusseldorf, in the 1893-94 season at the Opera House of Wroclaw, in the 1894-95 season at the Municipal Theatre of Magdeburg, in the end, in 1895-1914 again at the Berlin Court Opera. Since 1900 he appeared there primarily as Comprimario. He made guest appearances at the Opera Houses of Warsaw (1895), Cracow (1895) and Prague. In 1887 he sang at the Berlin Krolloper, also at the Court Theatre in Schwerin and in 1902 at Opera House of Leipzig. In 1904 he appeared at the Berlin Court Opera in the premiere of R. Leoncavallo’s opera ‘’Der Roland von Berlin’’, in 1911 in the Berlin première of ‘’Rosenkavaliers’’. Till 1914 he continued his career at the Berlin Court Opera. Then he was a singing teacher in the German capital, lived later in miserable relations. Probably died during the World War II in Berlin. His daughter Helene Alma was also active as a singer; she appeared about 1910 in Berlin, later in the USA.

Edyth Walker (Mezzo-Soprano) (Hopewell, New York 1867 – New York City 1950)






She sang at age 14 as a soloist in the Old Church of Hopewell, then in Utica (New York) and on Long Iceland. She worked for a while as a school teacher. She came to Europe in 1891 and was trained by Aglaia Orgeni in Dresden. Further studies with Marianne Brandt in Vienna. She made her debut in 1894 at the Berlin Court Opera as Fides in ‘’Prophet’’ by Meyerbeer. First major success in 1895 with a concert in Leipzig Gewandhaus under Carl Reinecke. In 1895 she was engaged by the Vienna Court Opera, where she sang the role of Fides in ‘’Prophet’’ by Meyerbeer and Azucena in ‘’Trovatore’’ and remained until 1903. In 1896 she sang in the Vienna premiere of the opera ‘’The Evangelimann’’ of Kienzl. At the Salzburg Mozart Festival in 1901 she created the role of Donna Elvira in ‘’Don Giovanni’’. In 1903, after a dispute with Gustav Mahler, she left the Vienna Opera House. In 1903 she was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where she made her debut as Amneris in ‘’Aida’’. She appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in “Lohengrin”, “Tristan und Isolde”, ‘’Faust’’, “Gioconda”, ‘’Martha’’, ‘’Favorita’’, “ and ‘’Lucrezia Borgia’’ (1904). In 1905 she sang here in the premiere of Johann Strauss’s operetta ‘’Die Fledermaus’’. Then she joined in the 1906-07 season at the Court Opera in Berlin and from 1907 to 1912 was a celebrated artist of the Hamburg Opera. At the Covent Garden Opera in London she performed in 1900 as Amneris, Ortrud, Fricka and Waltraute, then in 1908 and 1910 as Isolde as well as Thirza “The Wreckers” by Mrs. Ethel Smith and Elektra on 10/19/1910 in the English premiere of Richard Strauss’s opera ‘’Elektra’’. She made guest appearances in Brussels, Leipzig, Frankfurt (1907-12), Cologne and Prague with great success, she was especially admired as an interpreter in R. Wagner’s operas. At the Bayreuth Festival in 1908, she sang the role of Kundry in ‘’Parsifal’’ and Ortrud in “Lohengrin”. In 1910 she sang with great triumph in the Strauss Festival in Holland as Salome and Elektra. In 1909 she sang at the Beethoven Festival in the Hague the role of Leonore in ‘’Fidelio’’ under Willem Mengelberg. In the 1912-1917 seasons she worked at the Court Opera in Munich. In 1918 she sang at the Municipal Theatre of Elberfeld her farewell performance in Nibelungenring. After her retirement from the stage, Walker resided in Scheveningen, Holland until 1919 when she moved to Paris. She worked there as a voice teacher where she taught out of a private studio. In 1933 she joined the faculty at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau where she taught through 1936. She then moved back to New York City where she continued to teach until her death 14 years later. Among her notable pupils were Irene Dalis and Blanche Thebom. She died at her home in New York City in 1950 at the age of 79 after a brief illness

Hanna Mara (Soprano)





Probably she made her debut in the 1900-1901 season at the Opera House of Olmütz (Olomouc). Then she sang in the 1901-04 seasons at the Opera House in Wroclaw. Then she had a guest performance career. Thus she took part in the 1904-05 season in the famous performance series of  R. Wagner’s ‘’Parsifal’’ by the Henry W. Savage Opera Company in USA and Canada. She married the tenor Willy Schüller with whom she appeared often. Other details about her career and her life were not to be brought in experience. Her repertoire included roles like Marguerite in ‘’Faust’’ of Gounod, Agathe in ‘’Freischütz’’ and roles in R. Wagner’s operas.

Marino Aineto (Bartione) (Murillo de Gallego/Spagna 1873 - Milano 1931)





He studied singing under Leonardo Pla and Antonio Baldelli and  made his debut in Madrid at Teatro de la Zarzuela in ‘’La Indiana’’ of A.Saco del Valle (1897). In 1898, during a performance of G. Meyerbeer’s ‘’Ugonotti’’ at the Teatro Moderno of Madrid, he was heard by the maestro Campanini, the director of the Teatro Real in Madrid, where he and made in 1899 his debut in G. Puccini’s ‘’Boheme’’. After the retirement which took place in 1926, he lived in Milan.

Elizabeta Petrenko (Mezzo-Soprano) (Akhtirka, near Kharkov 1880 - Moscow 1951)



From 1902 to 1905 she studied singing at the St. Petersburg Consertvatory under I. I. Palechek, later she perfected her vocal art with Carolina Ferni-Giraldoni. From 1905 to 1915 she was a soloist of the St. Petersburg Mariinksy Theatre, where she made her debut as Dalila in ‘’Samson et Dalila’’. In the 1913-1914  she appeared at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. From 1915 to 1917 she sang at the National House in Petrograd, in the 1917-1918  season at the Theatre of Music Drama in Petrograd, from 1921 to 1922 she sang at the the Theatre of Music Drama in Moscow. She made guest appearances in Paris, London (1911), Monte Carlo (1912), London (1913-1914). In 1908 she appeared opposite Enrico Caruso and Nellie Melba at the Grand Opera in Paris as Maddalena in ‘’Rigoletto’’.

Konstantin Isachenko (Tenor) (Chernihiv Region, Ukraine 1882 - St. Petersburg, Russia 1959)





As many future singers, Isachenko sang during his childhood in a church choir. Konstantin Isachenko was heard by the well known vocal teacher, professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire, Rubez, who gave him his first singing lessons. During 1902-1908, Isachenko took singing lessons at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire with the famous teacher S.Gabel. From 1908, Isachenko sang at the National house in St. Petersburg. In 1911-12, Isachenko sang in Kiev, and from 1912 again in St. Petersburg, where he sang practically in all opera theatres of the city. In 1911, Isachenko undertook a tour through Europe (Monte-Carlo, Milan, Paris, London), where he sang in the Russian seasons of S.Djagilev. Despite being a lyrical tenor, his technique allowed him to sing parts such as Lenski, Alfredo, Berendey, Vladimir (Prince Igor), besides Almaviva etc. When he stopped singing, Isachenko became a known vocal pedagogue. He was professor at the Petersburg conservatoire (1918-1929 and 1938-1953). Among his students were Baturin, Geft among others.

He graduated from Kiev University as a lawyer. He then studied singing with Everardi and Petza at the Kiev music college, and graduated in 1898. He continued his education in Italy. In the 1901 to 1903 seaosns Bocharov sang in Kiev opera, then sang in Moscow (Zimin Opera), St. Petersburg, Odessa and other cities. He was awarded the honorary title Meritorious Artist of Russia in 1925. From 1932 onwards he sang mostly in concerts. He had a voice of a great range and cultivation. His roles include: Escamillo in ‘’Carmen’’, Figaro in ‘’The Barber of Seville’’, Beckmesser in ‘’Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg’’, Gryaznoi in ‘’The Tsar's Bride’’, Ivan-Korolevich in ‘’Kashchey the Immortal’’, Kochubey in ‘’Mazeppa’’, Onegin, Demon, and Rigoletto, as well as various others. Bocharov sang without vocal fatigue until his death, which happened while singing at the piano.
