He was trained in his father's town Lyon and was engaged after the first appearance there in 1924 by the Opéra-Comique in Paris. He debuted here as  Hadji in ''Lakmé'' of Delibes. After appearing as comprimario  (Beppe in ''Pagliacci'', Frédéric in ''Mignon''), he was engaged in 1925 by the Paris Grand Opéra. Here he appeared since 1931 in principal roles, among other things as Duke in  ''Rigoletto'', Roméo in ''Roméo et Juliette'' of Gounod and as Radames in ''Aida''. Now also at the Opéra-Comique he took over principal roles like Rodolfo in ''Bohème'', De Grieux in ''Manon'' of Massenet, Vincent in ''Mireille'' of Gounod, Werther of Massenet, José in ''Carmen'' and Daniel in ''Le chalet'' of Adam. Till 1950 he appeared at the Grand Opéra. He gave guest performances at the Opera House of Monte Carlo and at the Opera House of Antwerp. From 1954 to 1970 he worked as a pedagogue at the conservatoire of Metz.

He studied singing under Jacques Stückgold in Berlin, later with the famous heroic tenor Heinrich Knote. In 1908 he made his debut at the Court Theatre of Detmold. In the 1909-1910 season he sang at the Municipal Theatre of Ulm, from 1910 to 1911 at the Municipal Theatre of Basel. In the 1911-1912 season he performed at the Municipal Theatre of Katowice, from 1912 to 1913 at the Municipal Theatre of Görlitz. Then he lived guesting in Berlin, however, was drawn in 1914 as a soldier in the First World War and got in Russian captivity. Only in 1919 he could take up his career again, namely first in the 1919-1922 seasons at the Dresden State Opera, then from 1922 to 1927 at the Municipal Theatre of Chemnitz in which he appeared in 1925 in the premiere of the Wilhelm Kienzl’s opera ‘’Hassan der Schwärmer’’. In 1927-1930 seasons he was active at the Opera House of Leipzig; here he sang in 1928 in the premiere of the Hans Hermann Wetzler’s opera ‘’Die baskische Venus’’. Then he appeared at Berlin. In the 1933-1934 season he sang at the Municipal Theatre in Dortmund and from 1934 to 1935 at the Municipal Theatre in Augsburg. Then he again appeared at Berlin, where he led later an artist's agency. He appeared during his career as a guest among other things at the Berlin State Opera, Dresden and Vienna (1927).

His real name was Emil Enderlein. After his education he made his debut in 1912 as a lyric tenor at the Court Opera of Dresden, where he remained till 1917.

He began his stage career in 1909 at the Court Theatre in Weimar and remained there until his retirement (1932). He appeared in Weimar in different opera premieres. Here he sang among other things in the premieres of R. Wagner’s ‘’Parsifal’’ and ‘’Ariadne auf Naxos’’ of  R. Strauss. Also performed there in the premiere of the opera ‘’Hirtenlegende’’ of Eugene Bodart (19. 12. 1930). He was famous in the Central Germany as a concert and oratorios singer. Later began work as a vocal pedagogue in Weimar.

His voice was discovered by Cosima Wagner and was trained at the Bayreuth school by Julius Kniese. He made his debut in 1904 at the Bayreuth Festival as Froh in ''Rheingold''. In 1906 and 1908 he appeared with great success at Bayreuth as Parsifal. First he sang at the Court Theatre in Coburg, then from 1910 to 1918 at the Municipal Theatre in Bremen, in the 1918-1920 seasons at the Municipal Theatre of Graz, from 1921 to 1926 at the Municipal Theatre of Freiburg i. Br. and since 1927 at the Opera House in Kaiserslautern. In 1910 he was active temporarily at the Dresden Court Opera. After his retirement he led from 1933 to 1944 the Mecklenburg Land Theatre in Schwerin. There he  still performed occasionally, among other things as Loge in ''Rheingold''.

He made his debut in 1912 at the Opera House in Hamburg as Florestan in ‘’Fidelio’’ and remained up to the end of his stage career a member of this opera house. Here he appeared on 2. 11. 1920 in the premiere of the Clemens von Franckenstein's opera ‘’Li-Tai-Pe’’ (‘’Des Kaisers Dichter’’)  and on 7.10.1927  in the premiere of the opera ‘’Das Wunder der Heliane’’ of Erich Wolfgang Korngold. In 1926 at Hamburg he sang with great success in G. Verdi’s ‘’Don Carlo’’. He made guest appearances at the Städtischen Oper Berlin, in 1924 and 1927 at the Wien  Staatsoper, in 1926 at the Opera House in Hague as Max in ‘’Freischütz’’. During the Second World War he still appeared on the stage; then worked as a vocal pedagogue at Hamburg.

As a child he came to Chicopee, Massachusetts, where he sang in a church choir. He studied in Italy and debuted in 1914 at the Teatro Adriano in Rome in Donizetti’s ‘’Poliuto’’. Still in the same year he made guest appearance in Moscow. Guest performances followed in Budapest, Vienna and in Italian opera stages. In 1917 he joined to the Chicago Opera (debuted as Xalca in the premiere of the opera ‘’Azora’’ of Hadley). In 1918 he sang at the Chicago Opera in the premiere of Arthur Nevin’s ‘’A Daughter of the Forest’’. During the long years of his affiliation to the Chicago Opera he sang there parts like the Rodolfo in ‘’Bohème’’, Turiddu in ‘’Cavalleria Rusticana’’, Canio in ‘’Pagliacci’’, Radames in ‘’Aida’’, Edgardo in ‘’Lucia di Lammermoor’’, Duke in ‘’Rigoletto’’, Dimitri in ‘’Boris Godunov’’, Pedro in ‘’Tiefland’’ of E. d'Albert (1926) and Folco in Mascagni’s ‘’Isabeau’’, since 1922 he also appeared in  R. Wagner’s operas like ‘’Die Walkure’’ and ‘’Tannhäuser’’. In 1921 he had at the Chicago Opera in which he remained active till 1930 one of his biggest success in ‘’I Gioielli della Madonna’’ of E.Wolf Ferrari with Rose Raisa as a partner. After 1930 he still guested at the Cincinnati Zoo Theatre; then he worked as a pedagogue in Chicago.

She studied singing under Francolucci in Turin, then with  Sangiorgi in Milan. She appeared first as a concert singer. In 1909 her stage debut took place at Vicenza in ''Mignon'' of  A. Thomas. During the same year she again appeared as Mignon, but this time at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo. In 1909 she also guested with great success at the Teatro Regio of Turin, where she performed in 1910 in the Italian première of ''Salome'' of Richard Strauss. Till 1925 she was to be found over and over again in Turin. In  the summer of 1909 she sang at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires the role of Nedda in ''Pagliacci'' as a partner of Enrico Caruso and Mario Sammarco; also in 1913 and 1915 she appeared at the Teatro Colón, among other things as Micaela in ''Carmen''. In 1911 she made guest appearance at the Teatro Politeama in Genova in the title role of Puccini's ''Manon Lescaut''. At the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan like at the Covent Garden in London she was successful as  Mimi in ''Bohème''. She gave guest performances and concerts in France, Spain, Portugal and in South America, appearing in in Cuba, Peru and Santiago de Chile (1917). In 1913 she sang at the Opera House of Rio de Janeiro as Sieglinde in ''Die Walkure'', Micaela in ''Carmen'',  Nedda in ''Pagliacci'' and Marguerite in '''Damnation de Faust'' of Gounod. In 1915 she appeared at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in the part of Minnie in ''Fanciulla del West'' of Puccini, in 1920 as  Maddalena in ''Andrea Chénier'' of Giordano, one of her star roles which she also reported in 1917 at the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona. In 1920 sang at the Teatro Eliseo in Barcelona, in 1922 at the Teatro Petruzzelli of Bari. In 1924 she performed at  the Opera House of Lyon (as  Francesca da Rimini of Zandonai), in 1931 at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova. Her career at the famous Italian provincial stages lasted till 1935. After her retirement she worked at the Liceo Musicale in Como. She is not to be mistaken with the American Mezzo-soprano Margaret Roggero.

Carlo Tagliabue (Baritone) (Mariano Comense 1898 – Monza 1978)

After studies with Leopoldo Gennai and Annibale Guidotti he made his debut in Lodi, Lombardy, in Loreley and Aida. His debuts in Genoa (1923), Torino, La Scala (1930), Rome (1931), and Naples (1931) were all in Tristan und Isolde (sung in Italian). He also performed in Wagner's Gotterdammerung, Tannhauser and Lohengrin. However, Tagliabue would go on to excel in the Verdian repertoire, especially La forza del destino, Aida, Rigoletto, La traviata, Nabucco, and Otello. He created the role of Basilio in Respighi's La fiamma in 1934.

His international career included Buenos Aires' Teatro Colуn (1934), the Metropolitan Opera, New York (1937–39), and San Francisco Opera and Covent Garden, London (1938). Tagliabue's last performance was in 1955 at La Scala, at the famous performance of La traviata conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini and directed by Luchino Visconti, where Maria Callas scandalized the public by throwing her shoes off.

In his book Voci Parallele Giacomo Lauri-Volpi wrote, ‘’[Tagliabue] is the only survivor of a school that knows that in Rigoletto, in Ballo in Maschera, Trovatore, Traviata a melodramatic piece should be sung, measured and breathed musically in line with the mastery of great art’’.

Probably he made his debut at the Teatro Delle Muse in Ancona as Valentin in C. Gounod's ''Faust''. In 1897 he appeared at the  Teatro la Fenice, Venice in the world premiere of R. Leoncavallo's ''Boheme''. Around 1912 he went to the USA, where he continued his career. He retired from the stage in 1919.

First he studied philology in Bucharest, then received there also the first singing education and appeared already in 1902 as a concert singer. Then he went to Vienna, where he continued his education and concluded Doctorate Studies, however, devoted himself at the same time also to the song study. In 1907 he made his debut at the Municipal Theatre of Troppau (Opava) to which he belonged till 1909. In the 1910-1912 seasons he was engaged by the Opera House of Mährisch-Ostrau (Ostrava) and sang afterwards in the 1913-1914 season at the Vienna Court Opera. He took part from 1914 to 1915 as a soldier in the First World War, then appeared in the 1915-1916 season at the The Vienna Volksoper, in  the 1916-1918 seasons at the Opera House of Graz. From 1918 to 1921 he belonged to the Municipal Theatre in Hamburg, where he sang in 1921 the role of Rinuccio in the German première of ‘’Gianni Schicchi’’. Then he was active guesting and in the 1925-1926 season performed at the German Theatre of Brünn (Brno), in the 1927-1929 season sang at the Hamburg   Volksoper. After an engagement by the Municipal Theatre of Bremen (1930-31) he appeared in  the 1932-1933 season again at the  Hamburg Volksoper. Till 1934 he still appeared as a guest and then lived as a singing teacher in Hamburg. Guest performances led him to the famous German opera houses, among other things to the Dresden Court Opera and to the opera houses of Cologne and Wroclaw.
