Maria Ivanisi (Soprano)

Of Dalmatian origins she studied with Benedettg Lucignani and made her debut in 1907 at the Theater Minerva at Trieste in ‘’Lucrezia Borgia’’. The same year she sang at the Grande of Brescia in the mondial premiere of ‘’Nadeya’’ of  C. Rossi. She didn't get the hoped success and, thanks to the attractive aspect, she was engaged in the important company of operetta "Caramba." She returned to the opera in 1914 and in 1920 sang at the Teatro Bellini of Catania in the premiere of the new opera "Galatea" of  S. Savasta.

Umberto Sorrentino (Tenor) (Firenze 1883 - New York 1959)

In Italy, critics have delighted to tell their readers that Sorrentino is an artist who has the power to thrill one evening as ‘’Canio’’ in Pagliacci; on a second evening as ‘’Cavaradossi’’ in La Tosca, or as ‘’Nemorino’’ in Elisir d’Amore; again, on another occasion, to appear calmly on the unadorned platform of the concert hall and uplift the assemblage by his poetic rendition of songs. Sig. Sorrentino sings with dramatic fervour, his voice, ample in volume, has a suave quality and a legato that few tenors can boast of. He toured America from coast to coast, in opera and recital and appeared as a soloist with many leading orchestras.

He was a great friend of Enrico Caruso

Personal representative: Elena de Sayn, 1728 N St., Washington, D. C.

A night of Grand Opera

Dr. Fitzgerald related the story of signor Umberto Sorrentino, a noted tenor, who claimed to be able to relieve the tightness in his throat by squeezing the lateral aspect of his forefinger and the thumb, as these points helped and governed the vocal cords.

                                                                 Canio

He was an Italian operatic tenor, particularly associated with Italian dramatic roles. Breviario was born at Bergamo. He studied in Milan with Dante Lari, and made his stage debut in Pola, as Manrico, in 1924. He then sang the Italian repertory to considerable acclaim in Holland from 1927 to 1934. In Italy, he sang at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Parma, La Fenice in Venice, Teatro Regio Parma, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Abroad he appeared at Teatro Nacional Sao Carlos in Lisbon, Hungarian State Opera in Budapest, also making guest appearances at the opera houses of Malta and Cairo. He spent his last years in his native Bergamo, where he died. Breviario is probably best remembered for his Pollione in the first complete recording of Norma in 1937, opposite Gina Cigna, Ebe Stignani, Tancredi Pasero, under Vittorio Gui.

Giuseppina Huguet (Soprano) (Barcelona, Spain 1871 - Barcelona, Spain 1951)

She was a Spanish operatic soprano with a lyrical voice who sang throughout Europe prior to World War I. Huguet was born in 1871 and registered on official documents as "Josefina" Huguet. Her first music teacher was Francisco Bonet in Barcelona, where she soon made her operatic debut as Lakmå at the Teatro Liceu of Barcelona. She subsequently toured several countries, including some South American nations. She performed, too, with success in Italy, appearing for the first time at Milan's La Scala in 1896, where she sang the role of Ophelie in Ambroise Thomas's Hamlet. Huguet proved popular in Russia as well. Although Huguet often sang coloratura parts, such as Rosina in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, she also undertook the verismo roles of Mimi in Puccini's La Boheme and Cio-Cio-San in Puccini's Madama Butterfly, and her recordings even include excerpts from Wagner's Lohengrin (on which she is accompanied by the famous tenor Fernando De Lucia). Indeed, her complete repertoire contained a wide range of roles: from The Queen of Night in Mozart's The Magic Flute to Nedda in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. Huguet's career as a recording artist was not particularly extensive. Her discography consists mainly of arias and ensemble pieces from opera that were made by the forerunner of HMV. She also sung the role of Nedda in the first complete recording of Pagliacci in 1907 (with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Carlo Sabajno conducting).
