He studied singing in St. Petersburg under I. I. Palechek, then in Italy with Scoliar. He made his debut in 1889 as comrpimario at the Panaevsky Opera House of St. Petersburg. For five years apppeared there as comprimario. From 1895 to 1927 he was a prinicpal bass-baritone of the St. Petersburg Mariinksy Theatre. From 1908 to 1910 and in 1914 appeared in The Russian Seasons of Sergei Dyagilev in Paris and London. During his career appeared in 70 operas and operettas. Sang opposite Figner, Chaliapin, Bronskaya, Alchevsky, Damaev, Ershov. In Russian he was one of the best-known Wagnerian singers of his time.
